What we repair
Six shingle problems we see most.
The pattern of damage tells us more than the homeowner usually expects.
Missing shingles
Wind-lifted or storm-blown shingles replaced to match. We bring the most likely color matches based on your photos so the truck arrives stocked.
Curled or cupped shingles
End-of-life signal. We'll repair small areas; if it's widespread, we'll tell you replacement is the more honest path.
Cracked shingles
Often caused by foot traffic or impact damage. Discrete shingles replaced; surrounding area inspected for collateral.
Lifted seal strip
When the heat-activated adhesive strip fails, shingles flap and eventually go. We re-seal with manufacturer-spec roofing cement.
Granule loss
Granules in gutters and downspouts are the canary. Localized loss is repairable; if it's across the whole roof, the shingle is shot.
Nail pops
Backed-out nails get pulled, holes sealed, shingle re-fastened in the proper nail line. Usually a sign of original-install issues.
The mechanics
How a shingle gets replaced, in plain English.
Asphalt shingles overlap in courses up the slope of the roof. Each shingle is nailed across its top, and the shingle above it covers those nails with its bottom edge and a heat-activated adhesive strip. That overlap and seal is the whole reason a roof sheds water.
To replace a damaged shingle, the shingle directly above gets gently lifted. In CT spring through fall, when the roof is warm enough, the seal releases without tearing the upper shingle. In winter we sometimes need a warm-air tool to soften the bond. The nails holding the failed shingle pull with a flat bar. The new shingle slides into the same slot, gets nailed in the manufacturer-specified nail line, and the upper shingle gets re-bedded with a manufacturer-approved roofing cement.
Where bad shingle repair fails — and we've seen plenty walking onto second-opinion calls — is in the nailing. The proper nail line on a GAF Timberline HDZ or an Owens Corning Duration is a printed strip about an inch wide. High-nailed shingles (nails driven above the nail line) lose wind rating. Over-driven nails (smashed into the shingle, breaking the mat) compromise the seal. Underdriven nails sit proud and lift the shingle above. Manufacturer install bulletins from GAF and Owens Corning are explicit on this — and so are we.
That's why a Trust Proof shingle repair carries the same 1-year leak warranty as anything else we do. The labor is the warranty.
The honest call
When shingle repair makes sense — and when it doesn't.
Most homeowners who call us about a few missing shingles have a roof with plenty of life left. We replace the shingles, document the area, and the homeowner gets another decade or more of service out of the existing assembly.
But sometimes the call is different. When we get to the roof and we see widespread granule loss, brittle shingles that crack under foot traffic, or damage across multiple slopes that suggests the roof is just done — we'll say so. A $500 shingle repair on a 27-year-old roof is money the homeowner will resent in two years when the next leak shows up two slopes over.
We'd rather lose the repair sale and earn the replacement than burn a relationship doing reactive work on a roof that can't take it.

Common questions
Shingle repair, answered.
Can missing or damaged shingles be replaced one at a time?
Yes. Asphalt and architectural shingles are designed for piece-by-piece replacement. The shingle above the damaged course gets gently lifted, nails pulled, the failed shingle slides out, the new one nails into the same nail line, and the upper shingle re-seals with a roofing-cement bead. The repaired section is just as watertight as the original — if it's done correctly.
Will the new shingles match my existing roof?
Color match on a roof more than a few years old is the honest conversation we have with every customer. Manufacturers run slight color variations between batches, and UV exposure ages shingles. We pull from the closest current color in the same product line — GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration are our standard matches for CT — and the patch usually blends within a season once the new shingles weather in. We show you the match on-site before installation.
How many shingles can be repaired before I should just replace the roof?
There's no fixed number, but the honest signals are: scattered damage across multiple slopes (suggests systemic wind or hail), shingle granule loss visible from the ground (the roof is at the end of its life), or repair history of 3+ shingle events in the same year. If we get to a roof and see those signals, we'll tell you replacement is the more honest call — and we'll quote that too at no obligation.
What causes shingles to fail in Connecticut?
Three patterns dominate. Wind uplift from spring nor'easters and summer microbursts (most common — the seal strip fails first, the shingle flaps, then it's gone). Ice dam back-flow at the eaves in late winter (water gets under the shingle and lifts the bond). And nail pops from improper original installation (high-nailed shingles back out over years of thermal cycling). All three are repairable; only the first is usually insurance-eligible.
How much does shingle repair cost in CT?
Trust Proof published pricing: small repair $400–$600, which covers most isolated shingle replacement jobs (one section, one slope, single-day visit). Big repair $800–$1,300 for wider damage zones. We have a $400 minimum and a $500 minimum if your home is more than 50 miles from Hartford. Angi reports CT roof repairs typically run $700–$3,000 with a $900 median.
Do you do 3-tab or only architectural shingles?
Both. Most CT homes built post-2005 have architectural shingles (laminated, dimensional). Older homes — especially mid-century capes in Hartford and Tolland counties — often still have 3-tab. We match what's on the roof.
How long should asphalt shingles last in Connecticut?
Architectural asphalt shingles in CT typically deliver 25–30 years of service life when installed correctly and ventilated properly. Shingles installed without ridge venting, or on poorly insulated attics, tend to lose granules faster — we see asphalt shingle roofs in CT failing at 18–22 years when the attic ventilation was wrong from day one. The shingle wasn't the problem; the assembly was.
